JHI Report 2008
THE WARD JUNIOR HOME INTERNATIONAL 2008
Ainsdale Dunes, England, 20-21 September.
England Team Manager’s Report
Summary
This year the Ward Junior Home International was hosted by Merseyside Orienteering Club on Ainsdale Dunes north of Liverpool. Andrew Platt organised an excellent weekend that was enjoyed by all competitors. Both competitions were held on Ainsdale Dunes.
The England team had two changes from that originally selected. Julia Blomquist and Mairead Rocke declined the invitation to run and were replaced by Rebecca Harding and Chloe Haines.
Ralph Street and Alice Butt acted as team captains for the weekend.
England finished second on the individual day and won the relay day ensuring overall victory.
Accommodation
Accommodation for all teams was at Pontins, Ainsdale. Sleeping accommodation was in flats accommodating five team members. Breakfast and lunch were self serve with provisions provided by the organising club. The evening meal was provided by Merseyside Orienteering Club at a local venue.
Travelling
All team members travelled to the event by minibus and car.
Prize Giving & Social
This was held at a scout hut at Ainsdale close to the accommodation. The evening started with a meal followed by the prize giving. The evening was completed with a ceilidh.
Day 1 Individual
The results for the day are attached to this report. England won two of the age categories, Lucy Butt W14 and Jack Benham M14. The result was extremely close with Scotland winning by two points. The strength in depth of the England team was not as apparent as previous years with only 10 top 4 positions being achieved. The first two athletes from each country count in this part of the competition with points being allocated from 8 to the winner down to 1 for the eighth placed athlete.

Day 2 Relay
The assembly area was just outside the walls of Pontins although the undulating nature of the terrain made viewing difficult. All eight English teams performed very well on the day with the men almost matching the previous years performance of filling the first four places, finishing first, third, fourth and fifth. The women finished first, second, fifth and eighth.
